Provide homes for the people living in the disaster area   donate!

The main purpose of "EX-CONTAINER PROJECT" is to build a house utilizing ISO shipping container format to provide homes for those displaced by the earthquake and tsunami hit in Japan on 11th of March, 2011. This type of house is able to achieve lower cost with higher quality than normal temporary housing. We will support the earliest possible recovery of the disaster area.

June 30, 2011

Our prototype production is on schedule, despite the slight delay in the process flow. We are predicting for our prototype to be ready by early July. After our prototype is up and running, we would like to display it in a public exhibition somewhere within the Tokyo area. Please let us know if you know a location for this potential exhibition - whether it's outside or in a garage, we don't mind! The dimension of the prototype is: w5.4m x d6.0m x h2.6m. We sincerely thank you for all your support thus far, and we hope you will continue to support us!

The prefabricated bath - a 1418 hotel type - is put into place.

The surface adjacent to the doorway will be insulated with white glass wool. This 'translucent wall' will have a beautiful, subtle glow.

Jun 22, 2011

The ceiling is insulated with spray urethane foam. This type of insulation is very effective to prevent condensation.

In every unit, there is an opening up above for a staircase. Clients have the option to take advantage of this opening by converting it to a skylight.

Sashes for sliding windows are set in to place.

Jun 20, 2011

Insulated floor panels are fitted in to place.

Sashes are installed tentatively. Actually, they were fixed to wood frame in advance on the floor.

June 15, 2011

On June 14th, we had steel framing inspection at Nichinan Tekkou in Chiba Prefecture with Jun Sato, structure engineer.

The steel frame is the same size as 20ft ISO shipping container. The prototype is consisted of 2 frame units for this time.

The opening on the ceiling is for the stairs to the 2nd floor. Same frames are also used in the single-story type to unify the member.

These are the roof members. The steel plate which is bended 4.5mm will become a small edge to connect with the coping.

We apologize for the delay of our report. Under drastically changing circumstances of both supply and demand, we have missed the opportunity to report the current situation. After proposing the EX-CONTAINER project to several municipalities and support organizations since it has been launched, we have applied to the selection of emergency shelter suppliers offered by Miyagi Prefecture and have recently found our application "rejected" by the prefecture. The reason is not open to public, but not only suppliers which were rejected, but also accepted suppliers still do not seem to receive any order. This is supposedly because the total amount of demanded shelters was smaller than expected and the productive capacity of Japan Prefabricated Construction Suppliers & Manufacturers Association turned out to have no problem. If this situation continues, no order may be given out. Therefore, it is very difficult situation to supply EX-CONTAINER as emergency shelter under the Disaster Relief Act. We terribly feel sorry that we were not able to bring in good news to the supporters who helped us by various means.

Meanwhile, we have received many inquiries from NPO supporters, individual victims and municipalities who are seeking ways to recover disaster areas other than constructing emergency shelter. We will continue our activities to supply EX-CONTAINER as low-cost permanent housing and reusable alternative.

Also, our fist prototype has started to be constructed at a factory in Chiba Prefecture with the help of collected donation. The completion is scheduled on the end of June, so we will provide the information as the situation proceeds. We appreciate your continuing support for EX-CONTAINER activities!

March 27, 2011

We express a hearty sympathy for those who are lost and damaged in this immense disaster hit in Tohoku area in Japan.

We are launching a project that will support to provide homes utilizing ISO shipping container format for those displaced by earthquake and tsunami hit in Japan on 11th of March, 2011. We will make the most of our own know-how of the previously completed project, Bayside Marina Hotel located in Yokohama bay, developed and designed by Yasutaka Yoshimura Architects.
We are seeking possibilities as follows
Temporary Housing
2. Reconstruction Housing
3. Community Facilities (ex: café, shop)
will build up one common format that can be used as temporary housing as well as permanent housing later on after its recovery. We would like you to understand that although the low cost and short period of construction is most needed in this situation, we can still provide safe and comfortable homes and communities.

Today, we have opened the official website to seek your support and donations to set in with action as soon as possible. We will post more details of the specific use of donations as we receive them. Major disaster always requires a huge amount of international support to provide relief and long-term recovery effects. Your donation and support for spreading this project globally is highly appreciated. Thank you!!
